This proposed two storey extension to a terraced house on an Inverness housing estate was intended as a ‘Granny Annexe’ to house an older relative.  The new build annexe would replace the existing narrow section of house connecting to the neighbouring property, but stretch over the full depth of the house to make use of the available space.  This produced a long, narrow site, so the challenge was to arrange the accommodation in a way to create a light-filled, open space at ground floor level.

The design solution includes the use of large bi-fold doors opening onto the patio area; a glazed entrance space, and full-height glazed internal doors. The stair to the sleeping area is left open and a large rooflight positioned above, to allow sunlight into the lower living space.
